Write Your Own Step-by-Step Guide to Where You Want to Go

By Jeffrey Baumgartner

Want to do something? If you Google it, you will probably find dozens of web pages, blog posts, videos and other step-by-step guides that tell you exactly how to do it. You'll have your choice of text, text and images or videos. For the most part, you can simply follow the steps and solve your problem.

Indeed, this is so easy to do that for many people the natural reaction to a problem is to Google it. And that's fine. Step-by-step guides on the web have enabled me to repair computers, identify problems with my car, cook food and use a chainsaw without cutting my own head off.

Even if you want to make a big change in your life, you can simply Google it and find step-by-step guides. These can be useful as inspiration and guidance. But not one of them should ever become your step-by-step guide to changing your life. These step by step guides may have worked for their authors. But those authors are not you. They are unique individuals with unique strengths, weaknesses, fears and desires − just as you are a unique individual with unique strengths, weaknesses, fears and desires.

You Need to Be the Author of Your Step-by-Step Guide

You Need to Be the Author of Your Step-by-Step Guide. You need to be creative. You need to take into account who you are now and who you want to be. You need to work with your particular strengths and not be brought down by your particular weaknesses. You need to establish your goals and your milestones.

By all means, read other people's blogs and books. Watch their videos and listen to their podcasts. Look for inspiration on AwesomeYou.Be. But use all that info as inspiration. Think about the stuff that makes you think, "I can do that." That is the kind of thing that will probably work for you.

Be careful about the kind of thing that makes you say, "I could never do that." Ask yourself why not. Is it outside of your comfort zone? Then maybe you could do that. On the other hand, if it does not fit into your values or is beyond your reasonable capabilities, then reject it. There are other ways to accomplish things in life.

As you are inspired, make notes and put together your own step-by-step plan that takes you from wherever you are now in life to wherever you want to go. It does not need to be a perfect plan. You can always tweak it. Indeed, you should tweak it as you move forward, learn by your mistakes and successes and change your perspectives.

And, when you succeed, you can even write up your step by step plan, video it and make a podcast of it so that you can inspire others.
