Story - Have I Ever Told You How Beautiful You Are.

By Jeffrey Baumgartner

Once upon a time, some years ago, a young man met a young woman in a library somewhere not far from here. He thought she was the most beautiful young woman he had ever seen and soon told her that. She thought he was charming, handsome and caring.

They met for dinner and a film that Saturday. She put on her prettiest dress and he was ashamed that his jacket was wanting a dry-cleaning. In spite of that, the conversation flowed smoothly and delightfully.

"Have I ever told you how beautiful you are?" he asked.

She smiled a mischievous smile, for she remembered what he had said a couple of days ago in the library, and said, "No, never!"

"Really?" he said in feigned shock and adoring her smile. "How could I be so thoughtless? Why, you are without question the most beautiful young woman in the continent and I have travelled  widely, so I should know."

The mischief left her smile to be replaced with warmth and happiness. By the time coffee was served, they were holding hands across the table.

They dated for a year or so and then married.

Every day, the man would ask, "have I ever told you how beautiful you are?"

The woman would always answer, "no, never."

And he would proceed to tell her how beautiful she was and always in a new way.

They grew older and had children. Time stole their youthful good looks and left them with middle-age good looks, which are not bad, but not as nice as the young person's version. She put on weight and her body showed the subtle scars of three pregnancies. Nevertheless, he still saw her youthful beauty as well as the inner beauty grown strong with experience, wisdom and loving her family.

And nearly every day, he asked, "have I ever told you how beautiful you are?"

And nearly every day, she replied, "no, never," and then smiled inside in anticipation of the words that still warmed her heart. They always did.

Yes, of course they had their fights and issues and disagreements. But those were dealt with one way or another and by late middle age they had grown comfortable with each other and could not imagine a life otherwise.

Even happy stories have a tragic end and so too must this one. Yesterday, he lay slowly dying in his bed. His children and grandchildren were there as was his wife, holding his hand.

He looked into her eyes and asked, "have I ever told you how beautiful you are?"

She replied, "Oh yes. Every single day and it has meant more to me than anything in the world."
