Cartoon: Growing older is great. Here's why.Growing Older Is Great - Here's Why

By Jeffrey Baumgartner

Many of us fear growing old in a society that adores youth and youthful beauty. Sadly, this is doubly true of women who are pressured by Hollywood, the fashion industry and daft men to stay young looking. This is too bad, because there are a lot of great things about growing older.

Recently, I have asked friends in their 40s and 50s about the benefits of growing older. Here are some of their replies:

  1. Increased professional respect.

  2. I feel my feelings expand as time goes by.

  3. Becoming more serene than I used to be.

  4. Feeling no pressure to wear high heels.

  5. It's better than the alternative.

  6. Watching my kids grow into adults.

  7. Sex is better with experience and an experienced partner.

  8. More money.

  9. I have beautiful, lovely, unstructured time that's all mine.

  10. The most valuable thing I find with years is the internal feeling of balance and well being.

  11. Deep contentment and financial security.

  12. Knowing who you are and getting along with yourself instead of getting in trouble.

  13. Long-standing friendships and the ability to know and to love those one can fully rely on.

  14. I've learned to stress less; and I know that "what will be, will be "

  15. Knowing more clearly than ever who I am and not allowing the judgments of others, about how I've chosen to live my life (often silent but felt nonetheless), to chisel away at my happiness.

  16. You learn what's really important to you and filter the rest of the garbage out; and you know how to recognize garbage and keep it out.

  17. Wisdom that comes from learning life's lessons the hard way.

  18. Having acquired a great group of friends around the world.

  19. Wisdom.

  20. The increasing feeling of "I don't care what you think, I'm going to speak my mind".

  21. Not sweating the small stuff so much, feeling things deeply, and taking myself a tad less seriously.

  22. I like myself much better and am more accepting of others as I age!

  23. Appreciating the little things, like a good old whisky, a dance, discovering a new café in your neighborhood, a witty joke.

  24. Walking and watching the Sun come up or go down feels good.

  25. Being treated more respectfully by professionals.

In short, there are a lot of really great things about growing older. So, if you've not hit 40 yet, don't fear it. Embrace it!
